Meet Anne Little

About Me

Anne Little for Council

I am a retired small business owner and longtime community leader. For more than 25 years, I built and ran a successful sales and marketing company that represented over twenty national housewares brands—including Libbey Glass and All-Clad Cookware—across five states. With a team of fifty employees, I worked with major retailers like Macy’s, Costco, and Giant Food. After retiring in 2002, my husband Carl, a career Air Force officer, and I chose Fredericksburg as our home.

I quickly put my experience to work for the community. In 2005, I led the successful campaign to protect 4,200 acres along the Rappahannock River, placing it into permanent conservation easement. Since then, I have served on many boards and commissions, including Chair of the City’s Clean & Green Commission for eight years, the Tri-County Soil & Water Board, City Social Services Board, Friends of the Rappahannock, Washington Heritage Museum, Virginia’s Urban Council, the Fredericksburg Trails Planning Committee, and as Chair of the NAACP Freedom Fund.

In 2008, I founded Tree Fredericksburg to restore our city’s tree canopy and improve neighborhood livability. With the help of thousands of volunteers, we planted more than 10,000 trees—nearly half of the city’s total inventory—and distributed over 60,000 native trees and shrubs to residents. These efforts have provided shade, cooled our streets, improved air quality, and beautified our neighborhoods.

For nearly two decades, I have been committed to protecting our environment, strengthening our neighborhoods, and building a better Fredericksburg. That’s the kind of proven, results-driven leadership I will bring to City Council.

CURRENT COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

Tree Fredericksburg

FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

When I moved to Fredericksburg I noticed the lack of tree-lined streets. Walking without shade in Virginia summers is brutal. This motivated me to start Tree Fredericksburg. With the help of thousands of volunteers, and our 65 Tree Stewards, Tree Fred planted over 10,000 trees in our city and are responsible for over 47% of the city’s trees. We also have given away over 60,000 native trees and shrubs to the community to help improve our environment and beautify our neighborhoods. The city did not have a dedicated city arborist from 2008-2023. Over those 15 years, Tree Fred was the de-facto city arborist. We obtained over $600,000 in grants for trees, over 7,000 volunteers assisted us with our efforts, we saved the city over a million dollars that it would have spent to hire an arborist, Tree Fred did it at no cost.

Trees Virginia, Virginia's Urban Forest Council

TREASURER, BOARD MEMBER & PAST CHAIR

I am working with other environmental leaders across the state, helping to advocate for protection of our urban forests in Virginia.  Over 75% of Virginians live in urban areas and tree canopy is critical to our quality of life, as well as to sustaining our native wildlife.

Fredericksburg NAACP

CO-CHAIR – MLK BREAKFAST COMMITTEE

The annual MLK Breakfast is the main fund-raising event for our local branch.  As co-chair of the event, I am able to help raise funds to help further the mission of the NAACP.

Fredericksburg Trails Committee

FOUNDING MEMBER

I served on the initial planning committee that designed the extensive 19 miles of walking and bike trails for our city.  For the past 18 years I have continued to fight to protect and promote the trails from development that would harm the trails that are a great asset to our city.

Washington Heritage Museum

BOARD OF DIRECTOR & LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE

I am a past board member and continue to serve on the WHM landscape committee.  Connecting the next generation with our history is important to telling the story of our past while preserving the unique character of our historic city.

Virginia Bluebird Society

CO-FOUNDER-1996

My husband, Carl, and I are co-founders of the Virginia Bluebird Society.  I fell in love with bluebirds the first time I saw one in 1990, and I have been educating the public and advocating for this beautiful native bird ever since then.

City of Fredericksburg Clean & Green Commission

CHAIR (8 YEARS) CURRENTLY ON GREEN COMMITTEE

I was fortunate to lead this newly formed Commission for 8 years.  The Commission has brought focus to tree canopy, recycling, litter, dog litter, solar, and how all these issues affect our quality of life, the Rappahannock River and the land we all love.  I continue to serve on the Green Committee of the Commission.

PAST COMMUNITY ACTIVITY

Rappahannock River Easement Preservation Campaign 2006

Along with a huge group of wonderful volunteers, we planted and maintained the 34 downtown planters for 12 years with flowers in the summer and Christmas Trees in the winter.  I wanted to beautify our downtown and bring people joy.

City Of Fredericksburg Social Services Board

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

I served on the Board for four years.  Assisting the people who need help with the basic necessities of life gave me a greater understanding and appreciation of the struggles that many must endure just to keep their families fed and housed.  The Board of Social Services ensures that the most vulnerable of our population has a helping hand with these challenges.

Downtown Greens/Braehead Farm Land

CO-CHAIR – CAMPAIGN COMMITTEE

I helped place 56 acres of the Braehead Farm into a permanent conservation easement.  This beautiful land will be a welcoming green space in our city forever.

Serving on the FOR Board and helping preserve and protect our river was a privilege and an honor.  FOR is a major force for good in our community and I continue to partner with them on many projects.
